René Canales is a 5th Dan Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, certified by the Japan Karate Shoto Federation (JKS), former NASA engineer, and international-level competitor and coach. He began his karate journey at the age of six in Lima, Peru, and has spent decades refining both the physical and philosophical aspects of traditional karate.

After moving to the United States in the 1990s, Canales Sensei continued his development and has since produced high-level competitors and champions at national and international levels, including world championship performance.

His teaching goes beyond technique. Drawing from his background in engineering, high-performance training, and traditional Japanese methodology, his approach integrates:

  •  Technical precision

  •  Physical conditioning (strength, speed, flexibility)

  •  Breath control and mental focus

  •  Discipline and character development

As Chief Instructor of JKS Houston, his mission is to help students develop not only as martial artists, but as individuals—strong in body, clear in mind, and grounded in principles.

Jessica Canales is a certified instructor and examiner under the Japan Karate Shoto Federation (JKS) with over a decade of experience in Shotokan karate. She is a Pan American Champion and has trained extensively in both technical development and competition.

Her teaching emphasizes precision, discipline, and strong fundamentals, helping students develop both confidence and technical ability. She plays a key role in the development of students at all levels, including those preparing for competition.

THE DOJO

René Canales Karate is intentionally not a high-volume martial arts school.

This is a private training environment designed for:

  • Students seeking real traditional karate

  • Individuals interested in self-defense and personal development

  • Athletes preparing for high-level competition

We maintain limited class sizes to ensure personalized instruction and attention to detail. Every student is coached, corrected, and developed with purpose.

There are no shortcuts, no inflated rankings, and no distractions—only disciplined training rooted in authentic Japanese karate.

Admission is selective to preserve the quality, culture, and integrity of the dojo.
